Planting the Seeds of Action for the Future!
I shared with you previously how my younger daughter, Abby, was inspired by my older daughter, Rachael, to find a way to do something for children in need in our community. Abby loves shoes so I suggested a project sponsored by our county called Two Good Soles which provides shoes and socks for young people in our community that need them.
Abby took a big gulp, but steeled herself and said okay, she’d be willing to give them her shoes. She was pleasantly surprised when I told her we could buy shoes to donate, and she could keep hers. But the telling moment was that she was willing to give her shoes to someone else who needs them.
This is part of the lesson of our Vantagepoint culture. We believe in donating but we also go beyond when we give. To Abby that meant being willing to give up her shoes. For our company philanthropy it means we donate but we give something more – ourselves.

We involve our patient ambassadors from Shriners Hospitals for Children and the Children’s Cancer Center. We picked out every pair of the 350 pairs of shoes and 700 pairs of socks Abby worked with my team to donate. We believe it is of the utmost importance that what we do has a local impact, that it helps the people we know in our neighborhoods, go to school with our children, chat with at the grocery store. In short, we believe in contributing to the betterment of our community.
During these holidays, as we pause to remember how blessed our lives are, I value the opportunities we have to help others. And I’m loving watching my girls learn the valuable leadership traits of humility and giving along with inspired action.
